Edward C. “Babe” Carreiro

Founded Tips for Tops’n

Edward C. "Babe" Carriero, of Truro, formerly of Provincetown, died Tuesday, May 6, at Charles W. Gerstenberg Hospice in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Born and raised in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Manuel S. and Mary Rose (Cabral) Carriero. He was the husband of the late Eva (Cook), who died in 2000. In 1945 he joined the army and served in the 184th Infantry, 7th Division. He was part of an occupation force stationed in Okinawa and Korea.

Mr. Carriero had been a resident of Provincetown since 1947. He worked as a fisherman in New Bedford and Provincetown and bought a fishing boat called the “Jenny B” in 1963. In 1966 he bought his restaurant, Tips for Tops’n, on Bradford Street. He was a member of the Provincetown Lions Club and a longtime member of the Lewis A. Young Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his two sons, Gerald E. Carriero and his wife, Joyce, of Provincetown, and Joseph J. Carriero, also of Provincetown. He is the brother of Mary Lima of Ft. Bragg, Calif. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and his loving companion Madelyn Bigi.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown.
