Nathaniel A. Barney, 86; Mary E. Barney, 87
Devoted husband and wife
Nathaniel A. “Art” Barney, of Provincetown, died at Cape End Manor, in the early evening of April 28. His wife of 65 years, Mary E. (Richardson) Barney, 87, also died at Cape End Manor, shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 3.
He was born in Battle Creek, Mich., and was the son of the late Oliver and Althea (Howes) Barney. She was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of the late Roy and Edna (Pearce) Richardson. They met in high school, both members of the graduating class of 1939 of Battle Creek Central High School. Following high school they both continued their education. Mary went on to become a registered nurse. Following service in the Navy during World War II, Art graduated from Michigan Technological University with a BS in engineering.
On Sept. 12, 1942, they began their life together as husband and wife in Corpus Christi, Texas. For all of his working years, Mr. Barney worked for Square D Electrical Co., which required him to move his family to many locations throughout the country. While living in Bloomfield, Conn., he refused several opportunities for advancement so their children could graduate from high school in familiar surroundings. While living in Connecticut, Mrs. Barney returned to the work force, working as an underwriter for Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. They were both active in their church, avid bridge players, community volunteers, and, after retirement, loved to travel and hike in the mountains of New Mexico. They retired to Silver City, N.M., in the 1980s and were recently moved to Provincetown to be near their son, due to health problems.
They leave behind a daughter, Michele (Micki) Barney, and her children, Neal (with Sarah Slachetka), Priya (married to Jesse Brown) and Colin Thakkar (married to Laurie); and a son, Gordon L. Barney (married to Kathy Kacergis). A sister, Ann Hunt, survives Mary, and a sister, Althea Kuhn, and sister-in-law, Thelma Barney, survive Art. They are also survived by Pauli Pendleton, a daughter of the heart. Memorial contributions in their honor may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
