OBITUARIES

Ladoyt K. Teubner, 99

Chemist, educator, environmentalist

Ladoyt K. Teubner, 99, of Truro, died peacefully in the early hours of June 11 in his home, surrounded by family, just two months shy of his 100th birthday.
Ladoyt was born in Tallapoosa, Ga., on Aug. 15, 1908. At the age of 15 he moved to Westfield, where he graduated from Westfield High School in 1927. He went on to receive a degree in chemical engineering from the Pratt Institute (1931), a B.S. in engineering from Northeastern University (1938), a master’s in education from Springfield College (1954), as well as an honorary doctorate from Western New England College in 2001.

Ladoyt began his career as a chemist, serving as chief chemist at Westfield Testing & Research Laboratories from 1937-1939, where he formulated the chemical recipes for, among other things, Lestoil and 7UP. But while he had the brain of a scientist, Ladoyt also had the heart and spirit of a teacher. While continuing to serve as a consulting chemist for Breck Shampoos until 1944, Ladoyt began teaching science at Westfield High School in 1939, where he also served as a class sponsor for the class of 1942.

Ladoyt went on to serve as supervisor of visual aide for Westfield Public Schools, principal of Prospect Hill School and principal of Franklin Avenue Elementary School, which received a citation for excellence from the state under his oversight.

Throughout the years, he also taught graduate student classes at Springfield College, Westfield State College, the University of Massachusetts and various state programs in Massachusetts and Vermont. Among countless other activities, he was one of the founding directors of Westfield River Watershed Associate, a member of the board of directors of the Westfield YMCA, chair of the Committee for Title III Epic Program which helped channel federal funds to the Westfield school district, co-founder of Camp Shepard, and a 25-year Kiwanis member. While he cherished his many roles as an educator, Ladoyt counted the days spent teaching at Westfield High School among his happiest.

Master of many sports, Ladoyt was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, and was still schooling his family on the golf course at age 99, playing a round of golf less than two months before his death, and scoring (one of many) holes-in-one at the age of 91.

He is survived by his three children, John Teubner of Sequim, Wash., Christina Teubner of Somerville, and Arthur Teubner of Truro, as well as the generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family whose lives have been both created and enriched by his love, tenacity and humor. Among the family he held so dear are those who predeceased him, including his loving wife of 50 years, Beulah Marcoullier Teubner; his eldest son, Stuart Teubner; and his wonderful companion of the last 20 years, Helen Farrell.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church, Westfield, on Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the: L.K. Teubner Memorial Fund, Seamen’s Bank, at Route 6, P.O. Box 720, Wellfleet, MA 02667.
