OBITUARIES

Eleanor Hazen, 69

Co-owner of Wellfleet Cinemas

Eleanor Franklin Hazen, 69, died on June 28, following an admirable battle with cancer.
She was born March 23, 1939, in Newton to the late Rev. John Shade and the late Rev. Barbara St. Denis Franklin. She summered in Wellfleet from infancy and became a permanent resident in 1961. Eleanor graduated from Bronxville High School, N.Y., and then Dennison University in Ohio, and was awarded a master’s in education from Tufts University.
For several years she taught in schools from Provincetown to Chatham. At the time of her death, she was the co-owner of the Wellfleet Drive-In Theatre complex and manager of the flea market.
Eleanor loved and supported her community. She was a member of the Wellfleet School Committee, Nauset Regional School Committee and the Cape Cod Collaborative, serving as chairman of the latter two. She was a lifelong Republican, serving on the Wellfleet Republican Town Committee and as a Wellfleet election official. She was also on the board of directors for the Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce. She was to be honored in Wellfleet’s Fourth of July Parade as the grand marshall.
Eleanor was a remarkable, dynamic, extraordinary woman who lived with zest and energy. She met challenges with tenacity. Every aspect of her life was a signature, from her year-round outfit of shorts, to straight talk at town meetings.
She was an avid reader and adored her basset hounds, the flea market and Hawaii. Wellfleet mourns the passing and loss of this unique, remarkable woman.
Eleanor is survived by her son, Ricky Hazen III, of Wellfleet; a brother, Horace B. and wife Betty Franklin, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Rebecca Brandt Franklin, of South Royalton, Vt. and Caroline Whattoff, of Eugene, Ore.; nephew William, nieces Terrie and Kathy Franklin, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., niece Elizabeth Francis, of Wellfleet, nieces Nancy, Suzanne and nephews William and Adam Blake, of Reston, Va. She was predeceased by her longtime companion Don Jentz and their dog, Larry. Eleanor is also survived by her beloved basset hounds, Thelma and Missy.
A memorial celebration of her life is scheduled to be held at 4 p.m. at the Wellfleet Drive-In Theatre, 51 Route 6, Wellfleet, on Thursday, July 10, with a reception to follow at the First Congregational Church of Wellfleet, 200 Main St.
Donations in memory of Eleanor may be made to the Eleanor F. Hazen Scholarship Fund, c/o Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 571, Wellfleet, MA 02667-0571.
