Charles McKenzie
Charles McKenzie

Navy vet was golf & bridge enthusiast

Charles Stuart McKenzie, of Provincetown and Tucson, Ariz., died Friday, July 18, at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Angela (Nichols) McKenzie.

Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Charles M. and Claire (MacRae) McKenzie.

Mr. McKenzie had been a summer resident of Provincetown all of his life. He graduated from Tufts University and was accepted to Officers Training School for the Navy. He spent several years in the Navy and was stationed in various places including Boston, New Orleans, San Diego, San Francisco, Honolulu and Los Angeles. He spent most of his working career at Xerox Company in the Aerospace Division, retiring in 1995. He lived in Pasadena, Calif., before moving to Tucson in 1997.

During retirement Mr. McKenzie remained very active. Until recently, when his health began to fail, he was considered a real golf fanatic. Up until 2006 he had a boat that he used for fishing and trapping lobsters. He loved to play bridge and played regularly with different groups near his home in Tucson. He was the only man in a bridge group informally known as the “bridge babes.”

In addition to his wife, Angela, he is survived by his three sons, Charles S. Jr. and his wife, Noreen, of San Gabriel, Calif., Roger C. and his wife, Donna, of Eastham, Jeffrey A. and his wife, Shelle, of Coarsegold, Ga.; his daughter, Nancy R. Bower, of Van Nuys, Calif., and his 10 grandchildren. He was the cousin of Arthur Reid and his wife, Virginia, of Provincetown and Naples, Fla. He was also the brother of the late Carol McKenzie Ripley, who died earlier this year.

A memorial service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown, followed by burial in Provincetown Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517.
