Ernestine Michael, 89
Ernestine L. "Ernie" Michael, 89, died at her home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., on May 17.
She was born in Provincetown on Oct. 27, 1918, the daughter of John V. and Margaret (Williams) Morris and the granddaughter of Capt. Jackson R. and Amelia (Lucas) Williams and Manuel and Amelia (Woods) Morris, all of Provincetown.
As a young girl she lived with her parents and her grandparents next door to her grandfather’s wharf (Capt. Jack's Wharf). While her mother cleaned the wharf buildings and home for her dad, Ernie was able to mingle with the artists and writers that roomed at Capt. Jack’s (some that became famous in later years).
Ernestine was the wife of Bill Michael, whom she married when he was in the Coast Guard stationed in Provincetown. They married in Lynn on March 11, 1943. Bill passed away in New Smyrna Beach on Dec. 4, 2006, after 63 years of marriage. His ashes were taken to Provincetown for burial in the Williams family plot by his family last September.
As a young teenager Ernie was a very sought-after babysitter. She had one boy whom she used to call her special hip baby (besides her brothers Creighton and Leland) and that was Napi Van Dereck. She also was employed at Wong's Chinese and American Restaurant, Old Colony "back room," and as hostess for Tips for Tops'n and, for the longest period, the Holiday Inn, where Ernestine became long-lasting friends with Fred and Pat Sateriale.
Ernie was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post #3152, the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #0071 in Provincetown, and the B.P.O.E. Ladies Auxiliary in New Smyrna Beach. She was also a member of the PACL in Provincetown. She was a very active bowler and at one time taught children how to bowl. Bingo became her entertainment in later life.
Ernie and her closest friend, Marilyn Reis, of Provincetown, who died in 2007, put together most of the musical shows and skits at the VFW.
Five days before Ernestine died, a new great-grandchild, James William Richardson, son of Josh and Stephanie Richardson of Truro and grandson of John F. Michael of New Smyrna Beach, was born.
Ernestine is survived by her children, Joyce A. (and Jack) Coleman, Folkston, Ga., Carol A. (William) Wesseldine, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Donna J. (Charles) Hayward, Windham, Conn., Patsy K. (Larry) Borden, New Smyrna Beach, and John F. Michael of New Smyrna Beach; two brothers; Leland J. (Ruth Anne) Morris of Middletown, N.J., and Donald L. (Rose) Morris of Provincetown; 12 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Ernie was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Creighton Lee Morris, Creighton Lester Morris and John V. Morris Jr.; one sister, Charlotte F. Williams, and a great grandson, Chad Green.
A memorial was held May 30 at Lohman's Funeral Home, Daytona Beach, Fla. Ernestine's ashes will be buried in the Williams family lot in Provincetown next spring.
