Mary K. Campbell, 93
Generous friend, inspirational teacher, devoted mother
Mary K. Campbell, 93, died peacefully on July 26.
Born in 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Edward and Caroline Deckman, her interest in higher education and art led her to attend Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and the National Academy of Design in New York City where she met her husband, Kenneth Campbell, a painter and sculptor. They moved to Boston and then, in 1948, Provincetown, where they pursued their art and started a family. In 1956, after their divorce, M.K. returned to Denison and taught in the art department for 22 years before retiring.
Provincetown drew her back for summer visits with longtime friends —Malicoat, McKain, Yater, Boogar, Richter, VanArsdale. Her color-rich zest for living found creative expression in her prints and stained glass. She was a gift of joy and happiness and she loved to keep in touch with family as well as hundreds of friends and former students. Her exuberant, warm and often wildly funny notes were a bright spot for all. In the small town of Granville she was known to masquerade in costume as a character she had created to spread good cheer. She sought out the simple joys in life and lived in gratitude for all that life had to offer. She continues to live in the hearts of those who loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Campbell; her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Dee Campbell; grandchildren Austin and Brenna Campbell; and brother-in-law Michael Cramer. She was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Cramer, and her son, Colin Campbell. A memorial service is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the First Baptist Church in Granville, Ohio, with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Sec. 2. E-mail her family at mkcamp@insightbb.com. Donations in her memory may be made to Mary K. Campbell Studio Art Scholarship, Denison University, P.O. Box 716, Granville, Ohio 43023-0716.
