OBITUARIES

Charles Francis, 81

Charles Francis, 81, of Truro, died Aug. 25 at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster following a long illness.

Born in Truro July 1, 1927, he was the only child of the late Charles and Gladys (Maker) Francis.

Mr. Francis was the husband of Lorraine F. (Small) Francis to whom he was married for over 55 years. They met in Truro while Mr. Francis was building her parents’ home. Mr. Francis was a self-employed carpenter who built homes in Wellfleet and Truro.

Shortly after they were married, Mr. Francis served in the Army and was stationed in Washington state. Mr. Francis was very proud of his participation in the Boy Scouts and his achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. As an adult, he participated in and supported the Boy Scouts in Truro. He served on the finance committee for the town of Truro for 19 years.
He found enjoyment and relaxation either by fishing or tending to his three gardens. He was a loyal fan of both the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.

He was a longtime member of the First Parish Congregational Church and later the Christian Union Church of North Truro. When describing him, his wife simply smiled proudly and said he would be remembered “as a very good man.”

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Linda S. Pinkerton, of Vienna, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and his cousins, Arthur Bacon, of Orleans; Lucille Boyd and Isaiah Snow, of Truro; Marilyn Dyer, of Wellfleet; Winifred Fields, of Harrisburg, N.C., and Edward Maker, of Florida.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Christian Union Church, Route 6A, North Truro, followed by burial in the Methodist Cemetery, Truro. If desired, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Truro Rescue Squad P.O. Box 2013, Truro, MA 02666, or to Christian Union Church, P.O. Box 187, North Truro, MA 02652. Arrangements are under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
