Joan Carver, 75
Joan Lenore (Christopher) Carver, 75, died Oct. 17, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Leonard Morton Christopher and Lenore (Osborn) Christopher, Mrs. Carver resided in Glassboro, N.J., from 1938 to 1948, when she moved to Provincetown.
A graduate of Provincetown High School’s class of 1951, she was employed as a secretary in the town clerk’s and treasurer’s office from 1951 to 1954, and then briefly as a secretary for the Chamber of Commerce prior to moving with her husband to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb., in 1955. From 1956 to 1975 she resided in Providence, Edgewood and Barrington, R.I., until a career move by her husband took them to Albany, N.Y., and then to Long Branch, N.J., in 1982. The Carvers returned to Rhode Island in June of 2004 before moving to East Wareham in January of 2008.
From 1980 to 1984, Mrs. Carver spent summers working in the office of her brother’s Cove Motel in Orleans. Mrs. Carver became an avid fan of the Orleans Cardinals — she laughingly referred to herself as “The Mouth Behind Home Plate.”
Mrs. Carver was a member of the Descendants of Whaling Masters of New Bedford and the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Rhode Island under her ancestor John Howland. She was the granddaughter of the late Florence (Damon) and George Osborn of Toledo, Ohio, granddaughter of the late Edith (Dunham) and Harry Christopher and great-granddaughter of the late John A. Dunham, whaling master, known as the “Dean of Whalers” of Provincetown and New Bedford.
Survivors include her husband, Alan D. of East Wareham; a daughter, Cynthia Lenore Howarth, of Hooksett, N.H.; a brother, Richard G. Christopher, of East Wareham; a grandson, Kyle Carver Steere, of Hooksett, N.H.; nieces J. Christopher Sekely, of Houston, Texas, and Kelly R. Ford, of Jeffersonville, Vt.; nephew Dean C. Christopher, of Tampa, Fla.; and sister-in-law LaVerne E. Christopher, of East Orleans. Also great-niece Kendall Routh and great-nephews Sawyer and Cameron Ford, of Jeffersonville, Vt., and Andrew Rayner and W. Evan Sekely, of Houston, Texas.
Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to The Orleans Cardinals, P.O. Box 521, Orleans, MA 02653; or to the Descendants of Whaling Masters, Treasurer, 61 Cottage St., New Bedford, MA 02740. For directions and on-line guestbook, visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com.
