Born in Lynn on June 1, 1928, he was the son of the late Harry and Helen (Hill) Stewart. He grew up in Lynn and graduated from Lynn schools.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1945. He was discharged in 1947 as a hospital corpsman third class. Following his service in the Navy Mr. Stewart returned to Massachusetts and graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester in 1952.
