Maxine Stearns, 91
Maxine Stearns, 91, died Nov. 27 of heart failure at home surrounded by her family.
Born in 1917, Maxine had many stories of growing up in the rural Midwest during the Depression. She married Don Stearns just before the war and raised a family in Pontiac, Mich., where her husband worked for General Motors until he retired.
A widow for years, she moved out to Albuquerque, N.M., to be with her grandchildren and enjoy the mountains. She was an adventurous traveler, always looking for some place new to explore and often combining travel with her passion for bridge. She and “the girls,” her bridge club, would explore various cities during the day and play bridge at night.
She surprised her two sons with a trip to Italy, helped her daughter Sally buy her first house and was a loving Nana for her two grandchildren.
At 87 her family convinced her to move out to Provincetown. She found a whole new life, new friends and new bridge partners, a love of the water and of small town life. One of her last great joys was a reunion picnic with her extended family at Herring Cove to celebrate her 90th birthday.
Her bright spirit will be sadly missed by her sons, Tom and Chuck Stearns, daughter Sally Woods, son-in-law Bill Docker, grandchildren Leah and Tyler Johnson and many loving friends. A memorial is planned for the spring. Donations can be given to Friends of Council of Aging, Provincetown, MA 02657.
