Richard Rose, 80
Wellfleet native & business owner
Richard W. Rose, 80, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family early Monday morning, Jan. 5, following a long period of declining health. He was the husband for 52 years of Lois (Francis) Rose.
Born on Aug. 4, 1928, Richard was raised in Wellfleet with his five brothers and sisters. He explored a few career paths, including his years in the Navy, which took him to exotic ports around the world and from which he brought back many tales of adventure. He owned and captained his own fishing boat, a dragger called “The Squid,” and fished the waters of Cape Cod Bay for many years.
Despite his love of the water he opted for a career on dry land, so to speak, and began his own well-drilling business in Wellfleet, which he ran successfully for 35 years. He was an old-fashioned business man and built his business with a lot of hard work and a handshake. There were never any computers or cell phones, just good old-fashioned word of mouth and great service that sustained a successful career and family.
Richard decided to retire at the age of 70 with plans of enjoying his grandchildren and hopes of wintering in their home in Florida. He enjoyed spending much time with his grandchildren, Nathan and Kaylee. He began with trying to teach Nathan to drive at the ripe old age of four, and enjoyed many football games, school concerts, trips to Florida and, most recently, violin concertos by Kaylee. He will be sorely missed by many people, and we will be comforted by many happy memories — he was an “old salt” till the end.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Jeffrey W. Rose, of Truro, and Jennifer J. Brintnall, of Wellfleet; two grandchildren, Nathan and Kaylee Brintnall; brothers Charles Rose, of Georgia, and Eddie Rose, of Maryland; a devoted sister-in-law, Jean G. Rose, of Wellfleet and many, many nieces and nephews.
A simple graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, in Oakdale Cemetery, Wellfleet. All are welcome. Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the Wellfleet Fire and Rescue Dept., 35 Lawrence Road, Wellfleet, MA 02667.
