Christopher Zora, 66
Grandson of ‘Sea Fox’ author
Christopher Manuel Zora, 66, of Dobbin, Texas, died Dec. 14.
Chris was born in 1942, delivered in Boston by Provincetown physician Daniel Hiebert, and raised in Provincetown by his grandfather, Capt. Manny Zora, and Manny’s wife, Judy Tobey. In 1952, at the age of 10, Chris moved to New York City to live with his mother, Manny’s daughter Mary Ellen. When he lived in New York City he worked after school for a gentleman who taught him passion for and love of cars. He then moved to Texas where he attended Bellaire High School and the University of Houston, where he studied engineering.
As a kid, Chris returned to Provincetown every summer. He learned to fish with his grandfather, who was well known in Provincetown as one of the port town’s most famous rumrunners during the Prohibition.
In college, his heart was not in his engineering studies; instead it was in his love of cars. He opened his own business, Automobile Appraisers & Associates, which he ran for 40 years, appraising all kinds of automobiles all over the world. He had his own car collection and treated them like they were his own babies.
Chris loved people and he used to say he never met a stranger, which was what made him so unique.
This last year Chris returned to Provincetown when a reading of his grandfather’s book, "The Sea Fox," was held at the library, and he returned again for the Portuguese Festival in July. He was proud of his heritage and he showed it by carrying the Portuguese flag in the festival parade.
Chris loved Provincetown and he wanted to return there to spend his last years, but time was not on his side.
Chris is survived by his loving best friend of 15 years, Jacqui Brooks, of Dobbin, and his cousin, MariAnn Rom, and her husband, Tom.
Jacqui will be returning to Provincetown in July where Chris will be laid to rest with his mother, Mary Ellen Zora. He leaves behind many long time friends in Provincetown. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.
