Carver dominates boards, sinks Lady Fishermen, 55-22

The Provincetown girls got a glimpse of South Shore League basketball in their opener Monday. Visiting Carver proved too much of a challenge, using its height advantage and deeper bench to sink the Fishermen, 55-22.
“It was good to get all the nervousness out,” said Eve Rose. But the senior guard also observed the team needs to work on its rebounding and getting a step ahead of defenders.
Carver played a tight half court defense that stymied Provincetown, allowing few open shots. And while the visitors did not shoot particularly well themselves, they got plenty of opportunities by dominating the boards.
“We need to work on rebounding and boxing out,” said Provincetown coach Jamie Colley. “We’re tapping the ball but not grabbing it. It’s like a volleyball game out there.”
Provincetown came out aggressive. Melissa Lomba collected three steals in the opening minutes but, while those led to three points, the Fishermen still found themselves down, 9-3.
The effort continued throughout but points came easier for Carver which, behind eight points from Lacy Olsen, led 29-9 at the half. Carver’s second unit, which saw more time in the second half, still had a sizeable height advantage over most of the Provincetown starters.
Carver’s Lakiesha Govani led all scorers with 12, 10 in the second half. Tina Gillen, a starter who found herself in foul trouble in the first half, finished with 10, seven in the second half.
Provincetown was led by Lomba’s eight points. The junior guard also finished with five steals and had a couple other deflections that forced turnovers. Colley was not surprised by her defensive play.
“She always gives us that much. She’s all over the place and gives us 110 percent all of the time,” the coach said.
Provincetown started Lomba, Rose, Jenny Schmidt, Emma Silva and 5 foot 11 inch sophomore Brandi Weber. Silva, a ninth-grader, was called up from the JV prior to the game and played well enough to earn future varsity court time.
“She did an outstanding job,” said Colley. “She got quite a few rebounds.”
Schmidt finished with six points, Rose netted four and Silva two. Weber, who had two blocked shots, also scored one basket.
Another underclassman, eighth-grader Sophie Yingling, had a quick impact, coming off the bench to collect a blocked shot and a steal in her first minute of play.
“We did have a hard time getting it in,” admitted Colley. “But the girls gave it their all the entire game.”
