Titans trample Fishermen, Lady Fishermen drop two to Pembroke & Nantucket
By Katy Ward BANNER STUDENT CORRESPONDENT
The Fishermen headed into their game last Thursday, Feb. 9, against the Pembroke Titans with high hopes but were beaten with a final score of 62-30.
With two key players out, Jonathan Peres and Lee Russell, the Provincetown Fishermen played their best, but unluckily were crushed in a game under a 30-point scoring gap.
Sean Roderick, Cody Silva, Ross Silva, Luis Fernandez and Mike Luster started the game with an aggressive offense and a tight defense. They rallied back and forth until the quarter mark, when they seemed to lose their energy.
Coach Custodio Silva called a time out and gave the boys a quick inspiring talk that seemed to help the boys step up their game. Defensively they became more aggressive, blocking shots made by several Titans from the three-pointer line. The first half ended with the Fishermen behind, 30-14.
After the half, the Fishermen came back again with a much stronger game. Offensively they started taking more shots from the third. Cody Silva continually tried making shots at the third, but unfortunately watched many of them roll past the net. Sean Roderick played an outstanding game, sinking many lay-ups and never letting up on defense.
With four minutes left in the game, Ross Silva was thrown from the game due to the five-foul limit. Replacing him was Mike Luster who played tight man-to-man defense. Chris McKernon also played a great game, taking a few falls for the team and making a few shots from the third. However, although the team put in a great effort, they were still unable to catch up.
The Lady Fishermen also had an adventurous game spree. That same Thursday, the team traveled to Pembroke where they lost 52-36.
They fell behind in the first half, ending it with a score of 31-15. One key player, Eve Rose, was sick, but she managed to play most of the second half. Holly Rose, Melissa Lomba and Sophie Yingling all played an exceptional game, but just couldn’t seem to catch the score up.
The game started with a back and forth scoring rally, but after Pembroke scored a few more baskets, Provincetown’s players said they “just lost it” and continually kept falling behind.
“We played really good, we didn’t give up. We had them fighting for the win, even though we were behind by 30 points,” said Holly Rose.
Their next game against Nantucket was another heartbreaker, with the girls losing in overtime play by 5 points.
“It was a very emotional game,” said Holly Rose.
After playing Nantucket at home and losing by only one point, they had anticipated that this time it was their turn to win.
After a long, rough ride on the Nantucket ferry, the girls were not exactly prepared for the big game. However, after an inspirational talk by Coach Jamie Colley, they were ready to play, and they set out onto the court with aggressiveness and payback in mind.
The game was tight — at the end they were tied 34-34. They went into a four-minute overtime. Fishermen scored two points after the jump, followed by two by Nantucket. One of the Fishermen then fouled a Nantucket player, who then sunk both penalty shots. Nantucket then racked up a couple additional points, winning the game 41-36.
