Penguins out-skate Pembroke

H-P advances in States, next game is Friday in Bourne

The fans jumped to their feet as the Penguins topped Pembroke, 4-3, in overtime Monday evening in the first game of the State Tournament.

Even with the loss of Harwich-Provincetown co-captain Bronson Zawaduk (from a two-game suspension for a knee check), the hockey team still managed to ice Pembroke. With Jimmy Clark replacing Zawaduk, and some shuffling of line order, the boys played an outstanding game that extended into a 7.5-minute overtime, and a victory.

The Penguins came out strong both offensively and defensively in the first period. Jake Morris, Joe McKinnon, Sean Gould and Jim Clark showed great stamina, working well together and keeping the heat on Pembroke.

Clark led the team to its first goal of the night. He took one shot on Pembroke's goalie, missed, then shot again, netting one high in the right-hand corner.

Morris took several shots from the blue line, but each was a little off. Gould also took a few shots at the net that were too high. The first period closed with the Penguins up 1-0.

Drew Locke took charge out of the box in the second period, winning the face-off. A couple of minutes into the second period, Clark scored his second goal of the night, raising the score to 2-0 and pumping up the team.

In an unfortunate turn, H-P’s co-captain Tim Mason hit the boards, injuring himself, and was pulled out for the rest of the game. On Tuesday Coach John Danby said Mason had broken his collarbone and would be out for four to six weeks.

With 6:27 left in the second period, Pembroke pushed back. A Pembroke player slipped two past the Penguin goalie, Ryan St. Pierre, within 2.5 minutes of play.

A broken plexiglass pane then brought the game to a five-minute standstill. After it was replaced, H-P came out stronger than ever. Pushing hard, and with only a few seconds left on the clock, Locke swept the puck past Pembroke’s goalie into the net, with an assist by Gould. That score put the Penguins in the lead.

The third period started out shaky as Morris was called for a holding penalty. Too soon Pembroke scored its third goal of the night, tying it up again. Both teams played their hearts out for the rest of the third period, but by game’s end, the tie remained.

Officials allowed a five-minute break before beginning a 7.5-minute overtime.

With 2:35 left in overtime, H-P’s Gould sunk the game-winning goal, ensuring further play for the Penguins in the tournament.

Replacing Ryan St. Pierre, who played an extremely good game, was Frank Ulsch, who made sure not one puck got past him.

“It was a great high school game. Both teams played their hearts out, said H-P Coach John Danby, adding, “Jim Clark, Drew Locke and Sean Gould were a dominating force.”

The next game, against Norwell, is set for 5:30 p.m. this Friday, March 3, at the Gallo Arena in Bourne.
