Penguins surrender to Norwell in 2nd round of States

After powering out a win in overtime Monday against Pembroke in the first round of the State Tournament, the Harwich-Provincetown Penguins succumbed to Norwell, 6-1, Friday evening in the second round at the Gallo Arena in Bourne.

With six strong players unable to play, the hockey team struggled to put together a workable line.

Drew Locke, Jake Morris and Kevin Ryder were benched because of a team suspension, Bronson Zawaduk was out for the second game of a two-game suspension for a knee-check penalty, and Tim Mason and Chad Edwards were both recovering from injuries.

Both teams came out aggressively in the first period. Harwich-Provincetown, playing a mostly defensive game, held back Norwell for most of the first period. Penguin goalie Ryan St. Pierre played an exceptional game with continuous remarkable saves. However, with only 3:06 left in the first period, Norwell's Ryan Hines slipped one past the Penguins.

On fresh ice in the second period, Harwich-Provincetown came out strong. Jim Clarke and Shawn Hennigan showed boldness, taking continuous shots on Norwell’s goalie, but none could get past.

With 7:14 left in the second, another Norwell player slid one by St. Pierre, discouraging Harwich-Provincetown's hopes for a win. Norwell continued its march, sending another puck into the net with 10 seconds left in the second period. The goal was questioned and referees took a moment to discuss whether the puck had, in fact, gone in. After a brief debate, they decided it was a fair goal, raising the score to 3-0.

Coming out even stronger in the third, Norwell pushed hard and netted their fourth goal of the night just a minute into the period. Questions arose about this goal as well — as to whether the puck had gone in before or after the referee blew the whistle — but they ruled in Norwell’s favor again and the score rose to 4-0.

Forming a steadfast line, Joey Hopkins, Greg Lynch, Jim Clarke, Shawn Hennigan and Shaun Gould came out determined to hold Norwell’s score and try to notch it up on the Harwich-Provincetown side. Both Hennigan and Lynch fired off some beautiful shots, continually looking for a play or a move with which to outmaneuver Norwell.

The Penguins captured their first and only goal of the night after a change of lines. Harwich-Provincetown's Mike Scotti took control of the puck and let go a shot, zipping it past Norwell’s goalie, with an assist by Franklin Miles.
Norwell took advantage of a moment of Penguin defensive collapse with a shot into the top left corner of the net. Then the Penguins watched in disappointment as Norwell shot another past them, ending the game with a final score of 6-1.
