Ice show features Cape tip talent

TRURO — Sixteen-year-old Jennifer Milewski is among eight Cape figure skaters who will be performing solo at Charles Moore Arena in Orleans this weekend as a prelude to the main event — a performance by Olympic Bronze Medalist Jozef Sabovcik.
“I’m going to do a double axle. It’s one of the harder jumps,” promised Milewski, a Truro resident who travels to Hingham six days a week to train under some of the elite coaches in the business.
Sabovcik, a six-time national champion of Czechoslovakia, is said to be planning a back flip.
“He is known as Jumpin’ Joe,” said Jennifer Bryant, a coach at the Lower Cape Figure Skating Association, which is sponsoring the event.
It is the 27th annual show at the arena. Guests in past years included Olympians Todd Eldredge and Paul Wylie.
Dubbed “Fire and Ice” this year, the theme’s first half will include salsa numbers, Caribbean music and songs about fire. The second half will feature a tribute to the winter Olympics, and will include skating snowballs and flying snowflakes.
“We have two skaters with harnesses that are actually hoisted up in the ceiling,” said Bryant. The skaters are dressed in white and lit with a black light.
“It’s a huge, huge show,” she added. “We have these huge props.”
Among them are giant ice cubes, which will enclose a handful of skaters as they circle the ice. Penguins will also skate out of an igloo.
The props are the result of efforts from 50 volunteers, mostly parents of those in the show, who have sewed costumes, painted and built the sets.
“We had carpenters build the props and we have electricians that do all the spotlights,” said Bryant. “It’s a real community effort.”
There will be two identical performances, one on Saturday at 7 p.m. and one on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Lower Cape Figure Skating Association has more than 100 skaters participating, ranging in age from 2 to 70 and three synchronized skating teams.
Joining Milewski as soloists will be Samantha Joy and Colin Norgeot of Orleans; Lauren Gardner, Corrine Guariglio, Christine Clarke and Ashley Stevens of Harwich; and Emma Carroll of Chatham. All are advanced level skaters who compete around New England.
Milewski, who has been skating for nine years, is currently training for the U.S. Skating Eastern Competition in Atlanta in November.
Skaters performing in group numbers also include Juliana Bahring of Provincetown, along with Soleil Cole-Olson, Julie Hight, Kathy Hubby, Robert Hubby, Sarah Knittel, Cassie Williams, Eva Kuchinski and Rachael Lajoie of Wellfleet.
Performers from Eastham include Hannah Bryant, Chelsea Amerault, Allison Reeves, Corey Amerault, Natalia Bonfini, Meghan Connors, Joslyn Bonfini, Lizzy Loranger, Jessica Counsell, Natalie Cuccia and Nicole Goveia.
The show director is Chris O'Riordan. Three other coaches, besides Bryant, have choreographed the show numbers, including Amy MacMartin, Alexis Stevens and Kaylan O'Neill
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12 and can be purchased at the door. Toddlers under four are free. VIP seating is available by calling the rink at (508) 255-5902.
