Warriors fall to Plymouth, rain cuts game short
By Michael Iacuessa Banner Correspondent
With drizzling rain and wind from the outfield blowing up infield dust Monday, it was not exactly the type of weather conducive to a team breaking out of a hitting slump.
So, despite notching two victories last week, the Nauset baseball team's offensive woes finally caught up with them as they lost, 3-0, to Plymouth North at home in a game called after five innings.
"No one should have to play in this weather," Nauset coach Ken Duff said, shaking his head after the umpires sent the teams home.
Despite their being behind, there was not much protest from the Warriors’ dugout when they did. Most of the game had been played in cold, wet conditions.
The loss spoiled another solid pitching outing by Tory Summey, who struck out six and allowed just one earned run.
"Tory threw a tremendous game. We just couldn't get the bats going," said Duff.
The Warriors came close in the third. Down 2-0, they loaded the bases after Pat Sumner walked and Mike Blatz and Summey singled, but they left the bases loaded.
"We've had some opportunities," said Duff. The coach added that he did not expect big numbers from his entire batting order this year but even seniors who hit well last year have been quiet thus far.
Although Duff said the Warriors’ defense has been strong this season, errors contributed to the loss. In the third, Nauset gave up a run after a two-base error and a failed pickoff attempt. Plymouth, in a base-running blunder, also had two runners on third base at one point and the Warriors let them out of the pickle.
The loss ended a two-game win streak. Against Harwich, in a game played at Eldredge Park Friday, the Warriors rallied to break up a no-hitter in the sixth inning. They got three runs on just two hits for a 3-2 victory. Alex Palmer collected the victory in relief of starter Kyle Ritchie. Blatz pitched the seventh for the save.
It was Blatz's second save last week. He relieved Summey in Falmouth last Wednesday as the Warriors edged the Clippers, 3-2. Summey struck out seven in the game and had an rbi single. The Warriors manufactured the other runs, coming on a sacrifice fly and a double steal.
The Warriors are now 3-4 this season.
