The baseball dugout at Motta Field filled with four feet of water Tuesday. Both softball and baseball games were called for the rain. Michael Luster, who pumped out the water, points to the dugout’s high water mark.

The Provincetown High softball team emerged from a slump last week with a roar.

Seventh-grader Sara Roderick, the team's catcher, slammed a double and a triple to go with three singles as the Lady Fishermen routed Cape Tech, 21-10, for their second victory of the season.

Holly Rose and Kelly Johnson each added three hits to the effort while Melissa Lomba collected the victory on the mound.

Any hopes that the 2-6 squad could gain some momentum from the game were dashed Tuesday, however, when Motta Field was drenched after several days of rain.

Four feet of water were discovered in the baseball dugout when school began early Tuesday morning.

The Provincetown High baseball team also was hoping to build on its strongest effort of the season, a 2-1 loss at Harwich Friday. The Rough Riders were scheduled to come to Motta Field Tuesday for a rematch.
It took late-game heroics for Harwich, ranked 20th in the state when the season began, to hold off the Fishermen. Provincetown led 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth and then had the tying run on in the top of the seventh.

Only a game-ending major-league play by Harwich shortstop Jordan Weinreich kept Nico Teubner from having an RBI single to tie the game.
Provincetown Coach John White has noted all season that opponents have made the plays in the field against his team, but this was the first game Provincetown also stepped up its defense. It was an important effort, since the day before the team gave up seven unearned runs in a 9-1 loss to Cape Tech.

"We finally put it together and played a game I thought we were capable of doing," said White. "It was encouraging for them to know they can do that."

Jon Salvador was brilliant on the mound for the Fishermen, throwing just 79 pitches in seven innings and not walking a single batter. He only struck out three, meaning his teammates had to stay sharp in the field.

Bronson Zawaduk scored the lone Provincetown run, singling and stealing second in the top of the sixth, and scoring on Jonathan Peres's single. The team continues to struggle with scoring runs otherwise. Harwich pitchers made the task harder by also not issuing any free passes.

"We don't hit," said White. "We get runners on base but we can't get them in."

The Fishermen, now 2-7, are one loss away from being eliminated from post-season play. It would be the first time in five years the team has failed to qualify for the state tournament.

White said he may bring up some JV players over the next two weeks to get them some varsity experience.
