Rough Riders ride roughshod over Warriors
Michael Iacuessa Banner Correspondent
The Nauset field hockey team hosted its first game Tuesday, two days before the classrooms were set to open. At this stage of the season, arch-rival Harwich proved to be further along, besting the Warriors, 3-0.
“Harwich outran us,” said Nauset coach Jody Quill. “We know where we are and we know where we want to be. That’s what today was all about.”
Nauset is having to replace three key seniors from last year. They were the only players the team lost to graduation, but all three were all-stars and team leaders.
“We just have to establish our identity. We need to play more to see who is going to emerge. We need to take charge more on the field,” said the coach.
Harwich, a perennial state powerhouse, had little trouble taking charge, keeping play in the Nauset end much of the game.
Elise Driscoll tallied the first goal of the season, putting the Rough Riders ahead, 1-0. Lauren Gonsalves added a second score before halftime. The two then combined for the third, with Driscoll assisting Gonsalves.
It was the first varsity action for Nauset goaltender Tina Scichilone, who is stepping in for longtime stalwart Alyssa Sliney, who is playing for Bentley this fall. Scichilone, a junior, was the JV goaltender last year.
In all, the Warriors have nine seniors on the roster this year, six of them in the starting lineup. Among them are co-captains Kelsey McDonald, Brittany Bohannon, Shannon Waldron and Lauren McGown. Ashley Hanson and Emma Swift also are expected to play key roles.
Sweeper Mimi McPartlan, a junior, was one player who flashed potential on defense, getting plenty of action.
A sophomore, Katrina Messersmith, also has upside at right wing. The Warriors need to replace the scoring they got from Carly Benning the past few years. Benning graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Messersmith has the speed needed for the position.
“She’s an outstanding runner,” said Quill, who is working on ways to feed her the ball more.
“We had some good sequences. We had some good shots. We had some good corners. We just have to play more consistently,” said Quill. “We’ll be fine once we get a couple more game days under our belt.”
