Lady Fishermen kick it up a notch
By Joey White Banner Correspondent
The Provincetown girls soccer team was definitely the aggressor Monday as it rolled to a 3-1 victory over Chatham at Motta Field.
The Lady Fishermen controlled the tempo for the majority of the game as they won their second straight and improved to 4-2 on the young season.
Provincetown allowed just one shot on goal in the first half and outshot Chatham 20-8 overall. The Lady Fishermen also hit the post three times and had three corner kicks to Chatham’s one.
Senior captain Melissa Lomba led the way with two goals as Provincetown put great pressure on the Blue Devils (1-6).
“I think they did a good job,” Lomba said. “We just wanted it more.”
Provincetown’s first score came at the 15:07 mark when Lomba knocked in a rebound from Laurel Felton’s shot. Felton was credited with the assist.
Nearly five minutes later, junior defender Holly Rose’s corner kick connected with eighth grader Sammy Lomba, Melissa’s younger sister, who headed it in the lower left corner past Blue Devil keeper Rachel Johnson (17 saves).
The Lady Fishermen went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
“Our passing skills are getting better, we got a lot of chances,” said assistant coach Sophia Hill who stepped up to the helm to replace the absent Myya Beck.
“I think we played really well. We’re changing the field a little bit and still seeing where they’re best at,” Hill said. “They’re starting to come together and figure out what they need to do.”
The score was not indicative of how Provincetown controlled the game as the Lady Fishermen had many chances to pull away, but Chatham’s goaltender kept them from doing just that.
“[Johnson] was doing a great job,” Hill said. “That’s what we’re looking for [Roderick] to do. I think we’ll be there with her in a year or two. She’s got a lot of pressure on her and she’s doing really well for her age.”
With Johnson’s tough goaltending, the Blue Devils were able to creep back in as they cut the lead to 2-1 with 12 minutes, 30 seconds left when Michelle Preston’s corner kick deflected off a Provincetown defender and past eighth-grade goalie Chelsea Roderick, who scored seven stops on the day.
The Lady Fishermen remained aggressive though as Melissa Lomba knocked in another rebound, this time off Sara Roderick’s shot, with five seconds remaining in the game.
“Our team is better under pressure,” Hill said. “We’re a second-half team.”
Senior Laurel Felton was all over the field, while Rose played strong defense for Provincetown.
With the youngsters coming around, the Lady Fishermen have high hopes of making a return trip to the state tournament.
“We have a lot of young players and we wouldn’t be anywhere without them. … We’ve got four seniors that really want to get [to states] again.”
Provincetown picked up another big win Friday as it defeated Harwich 2-1 in a hard-fought battle.
“It was our most intense game yet – really stepped it up,” Hill said.
