Golf team wraps a learning season
By Michael Iacuessa Banner Correspondent
Golf is not the easiest game even for seasoned players, a reality probably not lost on Provincetown High's five golf team members as their season comes to a close.
As one example, at the par-72 Sankaty Head Golf Course on Nantucket on Sept. 30, Zach Tobias's 116 proved the team's best score during the annual Cape and Islands Classic. While that number reveals the difficulties involved, the young golfers do enjoy some fringe benefits.
They get to play exclusive courses like Sankaty Head and they get to golf year-round for free at Truro's Highland Links.
Coach Fran Johnson says the team, despite its 1-12 record this fall, is getting better.
"They walk off the course with smiles on their faces," he said, adding that that alone makes it worthwhile to him. "It's tough when they get beaten soundly but they see their scores improving."
Tobias, a freshman, and Chad Edwards, who did not play last year, have both broken 40 over nine holes. Tobias, a beginner last year, owns the team's best mark at 36. Edwards' younger brother, Cody, a seventh grader, has shot a 40.
On Oct. 6 at Highland Links, the Fishermen came just short of their second victory, losing by one stroke on the last hole against Sturgis.
Johnson called it a gutsy effort by his players. In a contest scored by match play, the Edwards brothers and Tobias halved their opponents while Trevor Lambrou and Leo Rose both fell, 5-4.
On Monday, the Fishermen lost (with a team score of 217) in a three-team match against Sturgis (172) and Cape Cod Academy (156).
"They've all been playing well and improving constantly," said Johnson, who focuses on teaching the basics to the team.
Only Lambrou and Tobias teed off for the team last year. Of the five, Rose is the newest to the game.
"He started real rough but he's been improving by leaps and bounds," said Johnson.
