Fishermen wrap thwarted season

The 2006 campaign will not include a return trip to the postseason for the Provincetown girls soccer team.

The Lady Fishermen started the season off on the right foot and the state tournament looked promising. But they lost their final five games to finish the season at 6-11-1.

“Great overall season. Everybody played their hearts out all the way to the end,” said second-year coach Myya Beck.

One of the highlights of Provincetown’s season and probably the most exciting moment came on Oct. 19 under the lights at Veteran’s Field in Chatham.

Eighth-grader Sara Roderick scored the game-winning goal with under 10 seconds remaining to pull away a 3-2 victory over the Blue Devils.

“It was the picture perfect game. Everything we’ve been teaching them … it all came together,” Beck said. “If I could bottle it up I would. They had so much heart and spirit. Their passing and communication — everything was perfect.”

The Lady Fishermen have next season to look forward to with talented young stars like Roderick and Sammy Lomba, but have a tough task of replacing five seniors who showed great leadership — Laurel Felton, Katie Martinez, Melissa Lomba, Melissa Sawyer and Katy Ward. Co-captain Melissa Lomba was one who showed a lot of heart as she continued to play after tearing a ligament in her knee in the first game of the season.

“They should all be proud of themselves … and thanks to the parents for all their support,” Beck said.

The boys soccer team also will miss the state tournament this year as the Fishermen ended with a disappointing 2-16-2 record.

Both wins for Provincetown came over the Sturgis Charter School out of Hyannis and one tie against Cape Cod Tech. But the highlight of the Fishermen season was their two-goal comeback Oct. 23 to shock Mashpee on their senior night 3-3 under the lights.

“It was a good team effort this year. They believed they could beat anybody and with that attitude kept big schools close,” said third-year coach Ansel Davis.

Although the record may not show it, Provincetown showed a lot of improvement from a year ago. The Fishermen knocked in 37 goals compared to last season’s four and only drew four yellow cards.

Young stars like Humberto Ortego and Dylan Nelson had a lot to do with that dramatic progression.

“Every single boy improved his play. The younger kids stepped up,” Davis said. “Took them to another step of their play, … all and all I’m happy with the season.”

With young stars coming up comes a loss in experience as the Fishermen will be faced with the difficult task of replacing eight seniors — Nick Martello, Nico Teubner, Sean Roderick, O’Neil Grandson, Jonathan Peres, Brandon Lilly, Drew Locke and David Anderson.
