The Provincetown High School girls basketball team took second place in the Lady Falcon Holiday Tournament in Mashpee last week, beating Cape Cod Tech 50-22 in Tuesday’s first round and losing to Mashpee in Wednesday’s final, 55-29.

Junior guard Holly Rose led the Lady Fishermen with 10 points in the victory over Cape Tech. Six players scored six points each: Melissa Lomba, Sara Roderick, Samantha Lomba, Jessie Rose, Sadie Santos and Kellianne Pannoni. The Lady Fishermen led 26-5 at the half and cruised to the 18-point victory.

Against Mashpee in the finals, the Lady Fishermen were able to overcome a cold-shooting first half but not Mashpee’s overwhelming height advantage. The inside baskets of Mashpee’s Leanne Horan put the host team up 17-3 at the half. Horan scored 12 of her game high 22 points in the first half.

Senior guard Melissa Lomba, who began the season with an injury, led Provincetown in scoring with 12 points, nine of them coming on three consecutive three-pointers to open the second half. The flurry brought the Fishermen to within 12 (31-19), but that was as close as Provincetown would get. They continued to rattle Mashpee with their swarming full court pressure and quick hands. The starting guards — Lomba, eighth-grader Sara Roderick and Rose — ran the offense with confidence, and Provincetown ran and ran and ran, but Mashpee’s height was insurmountable. Roderick scored seven points, Rose four and Samantha Lomba, Emma Silva and Santos added two points each.

“I’m disappointed we lost,” said PHS coach Michael Manley, “but I’m not really disappointed,” he added. “I told ‘em I’m proud of them,” he said, surprised he could feel that way after a 26-point loss. “They’ve come a long way in a month, really improved,” he said. “They don’t quit. They handle the ball with patience, run the floor well. They’re doing their best,” he said. “The best is yet to come.”

The girls, now 2-3, travel to Cape Tech on Wednesday. Mashpee’s record improves to 4-2.

The Provincetown boys basketball team competed in the Cape & Islands Classic tournament in Bourne, defeating Sturgis, 45-24, on Thursday and losing to Upper Cape, 59-42, on Friday.

Freshman forward Zach Tobias scored a game high 15 points to lead the Fishermen in the victory over Sturgis. Forward Cody Silva scored 13, including two three-pointers, senior center Sean Roderick scored seven points, center Dave Anderson six and Jon Peres four.

Tobias again led the team with 19 points in the loss to Upper Cape. Silva scored 12, including two more three’s. Peres, the senior guard, added six, Roderick four and sophomore forward Micah Watson one. Upper Cape led 41-16 at the half.

The Fishermen are now 2-5. They host Norfolk Aggie on Saturday.
