The Provincetown High School girls basketball team pulled a stunner of an upset on Wednesday, a 66-62 overtime victory over Mashpee at the PHS gym. It was the first of three battles on the home court in four days. Friday the girls lost by four in overtime to a strong South Shore Christian squad, and Saturday they took on mighty Nantucket, losing 76-60 in an intense, fast-paced game.

Eighth grade point guard Sara Roderick led Provincetown with 21 points in the Mashpee win. Simone Rose scored 18 and Sammy Lomba, also an eighth-grader, tallied 15. “We worked the ball really well,” said coach Michael Manley. “We shot a lot of layups beating their press.”

Provincetown battled back to tie the game at 57 at the end of regulation, then outshot Mashpee nine to five in overtime for the upset. Melissa Lomba scored five points and Holly Rose added four.

“We were confident,” said PHS coach Michael Manley. “Not overly confident, but we knew we’d play them better at home. We talked about them believing in themselves and in working together,” he said. “And they did. It was a total team effort.”

Against South Shore Christian Friday, the Lady Fishermen were down by three at the half (25-22) and tied at 42 at the end of regulation, but the taller SSC team prevailed, outscoring Provincetown 14-8 in overtime. Hot-shooting Melissa Lomba led with 18 points, including three three-pointers. Roderick scored 12. Sammy Lomba, Holly Rose and Sadie Santos each scored four.

Saturday’s showdown with Nantucket was another scrappy performance by the much smaller home team, utilizing their quick hands, swarming defense and some fine outside shooting to keep the Whalers within six, 36-30, at the half. Melissa Lomba kept Provincetown within four, 45-41, with three three-pointers in a row early in the second half, but the much taller Whalers had an answer for everything and slowly pulled ahead for the 16-point win, improving their record to 8-1. Roderick led Provincetown with 19 points, including three three-pointers. Melissa Lomba scored 15 points, four of them three’s, and Sadie Santos scored 10.

“We ran out of gas,” said coach Manley, who is very happy with his team’s continued all-out efforts. “If you had told me two months ago that we would be 7-6 at this point, I would have been ecstatic.”

The girls have nine games remaining. They travel to Sturgis Charter School for a game Thursday.
