Girls need one win for tourney berth

The Provincetown High School basketball teams played a double-header against Cape Cod Academy Tuesday at the PHS gym, two exciting games by well-matched, scrappy squads.
A three-pointer by Provincetown’s Sara Roderick with three and a half minutes remaining, her fourth three-pointer of the game, proved to be the game-winner in the girls’ 44-39 victory in the first game. Provincetown led 21-13 at the half, but Cape Cod Academy controlled the inside to tie the game midway through the second half, then led by four, 37-33, when the PHS defense shut them down, allowing CCA only two points in the remaining four minutes, none in the final two minutes. Two free throws by Sammy Lomba and a basket by older sister Melissa Lomba tied the score at 37 when Roderick hit the game winner. An outside shot by Roderick and one by Melissa Lomba completed the scoring.
Roderick, the eighth grade point guard, scored 20 points, Melissa Lomba scored 10 and Sammy Lomba seven. Now 10-8, the girls need one win in their last four games to make the playoffs.
“It’s one game at a time,” said coach Michael Manley. “I said before the season they were going to be an exciting team to watch.”
Despite 25 points from freshman forward Zach Tobias, including four three-pointers, and 17 from sophomore Cody Silva, the Provincetown boy’s team ran out of time in their 61-56 loss to the CCA boys team. Down by two at the half (24-22), the Fishermen used all their tools to keep in the game — strong inside play by junior Oneil Grandison and senior center Sean Roderick, drives and jumpers by Tobias and Silva, two three-pointers from senior guard Jonathan Peres and scrappy point guard work from sophomore Humberto Ortega — but were unable to stop the dominating offensive presence of Nick Aucoin, the CCA center who scored 32 points. In the end it was free throws by CCA guard Nick Clarke that put the game out of reach. In addition to Tobias and Silva, Peres scored eight and Grandison added four.
“Tonight we kept up the intensity the whole game,” said PHS coach John McDonough. “Cody and Zach played great. Oneil and Sean rebounded the hell out of the inside,” he added.
The Fishermen are 6-11 with three games remaining.
