Lady Fishermen blocked in 1st round

PROVINCETOWN — Although they got shut down in the preliminary match of the state tournament, Provincetown’s girls basketball team can look to a bright future, with only one graduating player in this year’s line-up.
The Millis High School Mohawks defeated the Lady Fishermen, 63-31, Monday evening in Provincetown High School gym.
Eighth-grade guard Sara Roderick was the team’s high scorer with 10 points. But the players couldn’t hold momentum against the largely older Millis team, several of whom were routinely putting up totals of 19 on the boards.
The first half started somewhat promising, with PHS down 16-13 with nine minutes left.
“But then they went cold,” and began committing multiple fouls, said Provincetown coach Michael Manley, allowing Millis to add some 12 points from the foul line.
“We were happy we were there [playing in the state tournament],” said Manley. “We had fun.”
He’s hopeful that most of the girls will return next year.
In addition to their athletic accomplishments this year, Manley, with great pride, touted his players’ academic prowess, noting that 13 of his 16 players are on the school’s honor roll and four are president of their respective classes.
