Penguins yield to Old Rochester
Provincetown’s Drew Locke scores hat trick
The Penguins put up a stellar fight against Old Rochester in the second round of the state tournament last Wednesday, but a win for the combined Harwich-Provincetown team just wasn’t in the stars.
The Penguins ultimately succumbed, 5-3, to the stronger team.
“Based upon the fact that we were shy of three of our best five players, the rest of the team performed as well as they could have,” said coach John Danby.
The remaining players are by and large young, and “some played magnificently,” he said.
H-P only had 13 skaters and two goalies to man the ice Wednesday. Danby said the ideal would have been 17 or even 20.
Old Rochester only had one loss all year going into that game, said Danby. “We really hung with them for the entirety of the game. We were never ahead but we were never that far behind.”
Danby praised Drew Locke, who he said “played as good a game as I’ve ever seen him play,” and called him “the only first liner we had still in the game.”
Locke delivered a hat trick, scoring all three of H-P’s goals.
“The last one was almost an end-to-end rush, at 5-2, really a remarkable effort,” said Danby, describing it as “a fitting end for a senior from Provincetown to finish with such an individual effort.”
Other stand-outs included junior Ryan St. Pierre, a goalie, and senior forward Mike Scotti.
“It was a remarkable effort by all the kids,” he said.
