Senior Jonathan Peres threw a 13-strikeout, 8-0 shutout win against New Testament Friday.
Fishermen win 8-0 in auspicious start to season

Rain postponed their original home-opener on Thursday, but Friday the 13th proved to be a good day for the Provincetown baseball team’s season-opener against New Testament, and 13 the lucky number. Senior right-handed pitcher Jonathan Peres threw 13 pitches to strike out the side in the first inning, on his way to a 13-strikeout, 8-0 shutout win up on Motta Field.

Peres had a perfect game going until the sixth inning, when New Testament hit two singles. He also went four-for-four at the plate, including two doubles, scoring four runs. Senior catcher Drew Locke was three-for-three, with two run-scoring doubles.

Peres, hitting leadoff, doubled and scored on a pass ball, giving the Fishermen a 1-0 lead after one inning. He then returned to the mound to retire New Testament on nine pitches in the top of the second inning, striking out two, before sparking a four-run rally with a leadoff single in the third inning. Locke doubled to score Peres, and first baseman Alex Armour, who went two-for-three on the afternoon, scored Locke with a single. With bases loaded and two out, left fielder Drew Green doubled home two more runs, giving the Fishermen a 5-0 lead. In the fourth inning Peres again doubled and again scored on a pass ball. Locke then doubled, scoring second baseman Leo Rose.

The Fishermen played a clean, confident game. Peres was in control on the mound, patiently mixing up his pitches and throwing strikes. Solid fielding, in particular by shortstop Zack Tobias, took care of the handful of balls New Testament hit. And while Peres was throwing strikes, the patient Provincetown hitters were wearing out the opposing starter’s arm with foul balls.

Now 1-0, the Fishermen’s next game is on April 24, after school vacation.
