Warriors outpace Harwich in Thursday meet
By Kevin Mullaney Banner Correspondent
EASTHAM — The Nauset track teams had their last dual meets of the season against Harwich on Thursday afternoon in North Eastham. The boys won convincingly, 114-22, while Harwich prevailed in the girls’ meet, 78-58.
Senior co-captain Connor Hayes led the boys team, winning four events – the long jump, triple jump, the 300-meter hurdles and the 100-meter. Fellow speedster Jamie Collum won two events, the 200- and the 400-meter, and junior Grant Schuerman qualified for the states with a throw of 122 feet 6-inches to take first place in the discus. Other winners were Scott Panuczak (800 meter and the mile), Noah Peters (100 high hurdles), Mark Monroe (high jump), and seniors Ty-Erik Green and Kel Senga won the shotput and 2-mile, respectively.
“There’s really two seasons, the dual meets and the invitationals,” said Nauset coach Mike Smith. This is the time the kids are pushing to qualify, he said, and a time to do more coaching and less meet-management. “Hopefully they’re peaking right now.” After their league meet on Tuesday the Warriors will travel to Norwell for the Division 2 Meet, an open invitational. The top five in each event will move on.
Hayes has already qualified in five individual events and the 4x100 relay, with relay-mates Nick Vissella, Jorel Radke and Callum. Callum also qualified in the 100-meter, Schuerman in the discus. Monroe is close to qualifying in the high jump and the 4 x 400 relay team is, too. The league meet is the last chance to qualify.
There are only six seniors in the 44-man team. Hayes and Green are the captains. Callum, one of a slew of juniors, raced over the weekend in the Coaches Invitational Meet. Hayes was not able to make it due to a death in the family.
“Unbelievable day,” coach Smith said of Callum’s performance. Callum ran two preliminaries before the final, and took fourth place in the final. “His time in the semi-final (11.36) would’ve won the final,” said Smith.
“It’s been a great season. They’re a great bunch of kids,” said Smith, now in his second year as head coach for the boys team. “No issues. They’re all there and all focused. I give credit to them for their commitment.” The Warriors end the regular season 4-4-1.
Sara Johnson won the mile and the 2-mile to lead the Nauset girls. Katrina Messersmith won the 800-meter and was second in both the triple jump and the 200-meter.
