Lady Fishermen on fire
Blowout against Cape Tech earns girls tourney berth
By Kevin Mullaney Banner Correspondent
A fine pitching performance by Melissa Lomba combined with an all-around team effort on the field and at the plate powered the PHS softball team to a lopsided 16-2 victory over Cape Cod Regional Tech Monday afternoon in Brewster. The win, their fifth in a week, earned the Lady Fishermen (now 8-6) a berth in the state tourney with one game remaining, at home Friday against Chatham.
Provincetown scored in each of the first three innings before exploding for six runs in the fourth. Catcher Sara Roderick singled in the first inning and scored on a sacrifice grounder. In the second, Melissa Lomba hit a hard double to left field and made it all the way to third on a fielder’s error, scoring on a sacrifice grounder by second baseman Natalie Silva. Holly Rose walked to lead off the third inning and scored on a sacrifice grounder by Shelby Zawaduk for Provincetown’s third run.
Provincetown’s aggressive base running took advantage of a meltdown by the Cape Tech pitcher in the fourth, with players stealing bases when they weren’t advancing on pass ball. Chelsea Roderick clocked a triple to deep left for an RBI, later scoring on a pass ball. Simone and Holly Rose also had hits in the six-run rally. In all the Lady Fishermen stole 25 bases, with 15 pass balls. Holly Rose scored three runs, and two runs each were scored by Sara Roderick, Melissa Lomba, Natalie Silva, Chelsea Roderick, Molly Costa and Simone Rose.
“I had to hold them back,” said coach Meaghan Eckhardt. “They wanted to run and run.”
Melissa Lomba pitched the complete game win, striking out four and facing only 24 batters.
“The defense did a lot of the work,” Eckhardt said.
After losing to Chatham last Tuesday the girls have rattled off wins over Cape Tech (at home 14-6) on Wednesday, South Shore Christian Academy Thursday (8-2) and they took a double header, 8-4 and 12-1 at home against the Parker School on Saturday.
“They have improved a lot. It’s very encouraging,” Eckhardt said. “They’re really enthusiastic. They want to do the right thing for their teammates and themselves. … They’re good athletes. They’re also young and fragile, but they’re all doing their best.”
