The Provincetown High School baseball team rebounded from Wednesday’s shutout loss on Nantucket with a come-from-behind, 9-4 win over Sturgis Charter School Thursday at Motta Field. The win qualified the Fishermen for a spot in the post-season tourney. They then ended the regular season Friday with a 12-1 loss to the tourney-bound Blue Devils from Chatham.

The boys end the season with a record of 7-5 and will take on Mashpee at home Thursday at 4 p.m. in MIAA Division 3 South tourney play.

The PHS softball team also had a small number of games, making the playoffs with an 8-6 record. In their early tourney play, the girls will travel to South Shore Vocational Tech for a 3:30 p.m. game on Thursday.

The baseball team was down 4-0 after two innings against Sturgis, before they settled down, scoring nine unanswered runs for the win, including a five-run fifth inning. Senior captain Jon Peres had the complete game victory. Peres, shortstop Cody Silva and Dimitri Papetsas each scored two runs on the afternoon.

The last regular season game at home against Chatham on Friday (12-1 loss) was a good game against a strong opponent that when awry in the late innings. Chatham took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and were beginning a rally in the third when catcher Drew Locke threw out a runner stealing for the third out. Chatham’s pitcher helped his own cause, hitting a two-run triple in the top of the fifth before being singled home himself for a 6-0 Blue Devil lead. Chatham, who ends the season 13-7, played flawless defense, while a series of errors by Provincetown allowed the game to get away. It was their third game in three days.

“I’m happy for the seniors,” said acting coach John White of making the tourney. White came back from his coaching retirement to take the helm two weeks ago. “We’ve played every team on the schedule in my two weeks back,” White said, “and with this group of kids the only team I would expect trouble from is Cape Tech. At Nantucket we were only down by two runs in the fifth,” he said, lamenting the 10 errors in the 8-0 loss. “You can’t expect to make that many errors and expect to win.”

“We struggled offensively,” he said. “We know what we have and we know what we don’t have. If we’re gonna have any chance in the tourney it’s going to be with pitching and defense.”

The winner of the Provincetown-Mashpee game will play Nantucket on Sunday, on the island. The winner of the Provincetown-South Shore softball game will play East Bridgewater Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
