Fall sports teams strive to get footing
By Kevin Mullaney Banner Correspondent
The fall sports seasons are underway at Provincetown High School, with three sports teams— girls and boys soccer, and golf — vying for the spotlight.
The golf team was launched five years ago and is still under the coaching of science teacher Fran Johnson. The girls soccer team is coached by Heather Rogers and the boys team by Evan White, two 2003 graduates from PHS. Physical education teacher Lisa Colley is serving as acting athletic director.
The boys soccer team is 0-4 after Monday’s 2-1 loss to New Testament, a game coach White said was back and forth from the beginning and a game that showed his team is improving.
It’s a young team, with 12 players — no seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and the rest seventh to ninth grade. Team captains are junior Humberto Ortega and freshman Dylan Nelson, both defensive players “Dylan is a very mature player and a good leader,” coach White said of Nelson. Of Ortega, he said, “He does it all. He’s the best defensive player, the best forward, best passer and ball handler.” Junior Micah Watson, the big, talented striker, scored the only goal against New Testament. “He can run and run and run,” said White, The boys square off at home Friday against Sturgis, then take on South Shore Christian Academy on Saturday.
The girls team is now 0-3 after a 10-1 shellacking at the hands (feet) of Nantucket on Thursday. They, too, are a young squad, with just over a dozen players. Team captains are junior Emma Silva and senior Holly Rose, the only two upperclassmen on the team.
“Most experienced are in the front and on defense, like an ‘I',” coach Rogers said. The defense is led by Rose and Natalie Silva. Freshman Sammy Lomba, a strong player, is at center. Freshmen Kelly Pinone, Simone Rose and Chelsea Roderick play wing. And there are two goalies — seventh grader Brittany Silva and freshman Chelsea Roderick.
“They’re very positive. They all want to play hard, try hard,” Rogers said. “It’s a good feeling.”
The girls play the first game of a double header on Saturday against SSCA.
The PHS golf team has yet to play a match, but coach Fran Johnson said they play well against the other teams in the Lighthouse League. There are no non-league games scheduled. Seven players make up the team, including one female, junior Anna Bent, who Johnson said is coming along well. Junior Trevor Lambrou is playing well and in his third year on the team. Sophomore Zack Tobias is a strong three-sport athlete. Eighth grader Cody Edwards has a real nice swing and a love for the game. Senior Alex Armour, junior Cody Silva and sophomore Leo Rose round out the squad.
The team will take on Cape Cod Academy today (Thursday) and Sturgis Friday afternoon at the Highland Links in Truro, their home course, which coach Johnson said is in excellent shape.
