Nauset girls drop close one
By Kevin Mullaney Banner Correspondent
The Nauset High School girls volleyball team rallied from an 18-12 deficit to take the second game in their match against Whitman-Hanson Friday at the gym in North Eastham, but were unable to take another, losing the best of five series 3-1.
It was a good match,” coach Bob Reynolds said of their 26-24 loss in the final game. “We made a game of it, and it was a good match overall,” he said. The Lady Warriors pulled to within four in the first game before losing 25-20, won the second, then came up short 25-13 in the third before the close final game.
Reynolds has high praise for the play of senior co-captain Alexandra El-Bayeh, whose height and athletic ability make her a dominant player. “Alexandra is one of the intense ones,” he said. “She loves the game.” Senior Casey Kavanagh is the other co-captain. Seniors Katelyn Mooney and Christie Heilala, junior Katee Varley, Lara Megalhaes and Kayla Adams and sophomore Megan Leyton round out the squad.
“Lack of depth hurts us,” Reynolds said of his eight-player varsity, which allows for only two substitutes. “Most teams have 12 to 16 players and use them all,” he said.
“We’re getting better, “ said El-Bayeh. “We played really well against Falmouth, beat ‘em the first game. El-Bayeh said their defense is great. As a captain she said she “wants everyone to play their best whether we win or not.” Now 3-6, the girls host Coyle-Cassidy on Wednesday.
