Sisters Holly and Simone Rose scored goals minutes apart late in the second half to tie the score at two, but Cape Cod Academy came back with one more to defeat the Provincetown High School girls 3-2 in soccer action on Tuesday.
Cape Cod Academy broke the scoreless tie late in the first half in what proved to be a pretty well-matched game. They upped their lead to 2-0 midway through the second half. Provincetown was finally able to break the ice when sweeper Holly Rose booted a long shot past the CCA goalie. Simone Rose raced down the side past several defenders before kicking a solid shot into the net. CCA scored a minute later and held on until time ran out.
Chelsey Roderick made a slew of nice saves in goal to keep this game close, and forwards Simone Rose, Sammy Lomba and Kelly Pannoni had outstanding games.
“Kelly is amazing,” said coach Heather Rogers of her speedy forward. “She’s not afraid to take a shot. She listens well and is able to get composed. The whole front line is very good. They’ve been playing together awhile,” Rogers said. “They know where the other person is going to be, always moving and switching.
“Holly is an amazing sweeper. She’s not afraid to use her body, “ said Rogers, referring to the numerous times she muscled the ball away from CCA’s offense. In addition to Rose, two seventh graders — Corelle Rokicki and Katie Silva, played solid defense.
“The team is definitely improving,” Rogers said. “They’re spreading out, working as a team, communicating, doing the basics.” Provincetown is now 3-5 overall and 1-5 in Lighthouse League play.
