Fishermen show off their footwork in match against New Testament

The Provincetown High School boys soccer team played with inspiration Monday afternoon when they took on New Testament at Motta Field. Despite playing the entire game with 10 players to New Testament’s 11, the Fishermen’s hustle made it an evenly matched battle from start to finish, ending in a zero-zero tie.

“That was the best game so far this year,” said coach Evan White. “They knew they had a chance to win and had to go for it.” The Fishermen played aggressive defense throughout and all over the field with good success. When New Testament was able to break into the offensive zone, defenders Humberto Ortega and Dylan Nelson allowed few shots on net. Goalie Jared King had an outstanding game in net, particularly near the end of the contest when New Testament mounted several threats.

“He saved it for us,” said White, who had high praise for the play of Danny Perneta. Perneta had a few shots on net, including a header from in front that hit the crossbar.

Offensively the Fishermen relied mostly on finesse and ball control. Perneta, Luke Hadley, Connor Faye and Chris Nabstedt showed great footwork with mostly short passes to enter the offensive zone. “They’re improving,” coach White said of his now 0-8-1 squad. “They even surprised me,” he said of all the fancy footwork and passing. The boys take on Mashpee at home on Friday.
