The Provincetown boys basketball team had less than a happy time at the Harwich Holiday Tournament, dropping Thursday’s game to Harwich 68-45, then watching their first half lead evaporate in the consolation game against Sturgis Friday night, losing 58-43.

Harwich opened the game in a full court, trapping press that put the Fishermen off balance, opening up a 17-point (22-5) lead by the end of the first quarter. Eight straight points early in the second quarter on two three-pointers (by Ben Fortier and Humberto Ortega) and a Zach Tobias drive showed some spark, but another dry spell set in. The Fishermen trailed 42-19 at the half and 54-29 after three quarters. Tobias led the team with 23 points, Fortier scored nine, Cody Silva six, Micah Watson four and Ortega scored three.

Fortier, the smooth shooting forward, scored 23 points to lead all scorers in Friday’s consolation game against Sturgis, where the Fishermen led for three quarters, then were outshot 19-2 in the final quarter for the 15 point loss. They were unable to score at all in the last four and a half minutes. Silva scored seven, Ortega six and Tobias five. Micah Watson added two.

PHS coach John McDonough did praise the all-around play of Fortier, Ortega and Watson, but was clearly disappointed in his team’s overall effort in both games.

“The tournament was a wake-up call for them,” he said. McDonough demands a high-energy, attacking style of offense that worked well in the first three games. “I expect so much from the kids and I’m hugely disappointed.” he said.

The boys, now 2-3, play next on Saturday, a home game against Bethany Christian Academy.

The Provincetown girls team fared better in their tourney showing in Mashpee, winning the first game 36-29 over Cape Tech, then losing to Mashpee in Thursday night’s final, 53-23. Sadie Santos led the team with eight points against Cape Tech. Simone Rose scored seven, Holly Rose five and Emma Silva and Brandi Weber scored four each. Weber led the girls with six points in the Mashpee game. Simone Rose scored five and Holly Rose four. Now 2-3, the girls play BCA in the first game on Saturday.
