Junior forward Brett Conrad scored 23 points, including the winning layup with three seconds remaining, to give the Nauset boys team an exciting 54-52 victory over Barnstable Friday night in North Eastham. The win was the consolation game of Nauset’s first annual Holiday Festival, following Thursday’s defeat at the hands of Brookline. Somerville, which defeated Barnstable in the first round, won the tourney with a two-point (56-54) victory over Brookline.

Point guard Mike Quill scored 17 points and Conrad 15 in the high scoring, 19-point loss (79-60) to Brookline, the team’s first loss of the young season. Connor Seymour scored 10.

The Warriors were down by one at the end of the first quarter against Barnstable. Two free throws, a jumper and a drive by Conrad, followed by a Quill layup, put Nauset up 25-24 with three minutes left to the half. A Mark Munroe jump shot and two free throws by Quill gave them the three-point lead at the half, but Barnstable tied the game early in the fourth quarter, and neither team could pull away.

A nice pass inside by Quill to Jon Rouillard gave Nauset a 50-48 edge with 3:10 remaining and the teams fought scoreless until Barnstable put in two free throws, then took the lead (52-50) with 30 seconds remaining. A Munroe free throw pulled them within one, setting the stage for Conrad’s winning basket, a strong move inside off the fast break. Conrad was named the All-Tourney player for Nauset.

“It was a typical Barnstable-Nauset game,” said Warrior head coach Keith Arnold. “They’ve all been close like that.”

Conrad, he said of the 6’6” junior, is showing much improvement. And their other big guy, Seymour, he described as “a horse on the boards.” The loss, to Brookline, was against a very good team, and despite the win over Barnstable, coach Arnold said the offense is lacking rhythm. “We’re going to get a lot better.”

In addition to Conrad’s 23, Seymour and forward Monroe scored eight each, Brendan Scalley scored six and Quill five. Nauset, now 4-1, plays two home games this week — Plymouth South Wednesday and North Quincy Friday.
