Down by five points at the half, the Provincetown girls basketball team outscored Bristol-Plymouth 16-6 in the third quarter and held on for a 39-34 victory in their preliminary round, state tourney matchup. This is the team’s first tourney win in five years.
“It wasn’t pretty,” said PHS coach Michael Manley, who called it a hard-fought game. “Both teams took a beating,” he said. Eighth-grader Simone Rose led all scorers with 17 points. Freshman Sammy Lomba scored eight, and junior Sadie Santos hit for six.
The teams were tied at seven after one quarter and Bristol-Plymouth scored six quick points to take an 18-13 lead at the half. The game was a dogfight from the beginning, very physical, with both teams missing a lot of shots but playing full out. The lead see-sawed for most of the third quarter until Provincetown took the lead for good, with a Simone Rose layup with under two minutes left in the quarter. Rose then hit a three and Sammy Lomba put in a free throw to give Provincetown a 29-25 lead. The fourth quarter did not let up in intensity. Layups by center Brandi Weber and Lomba and two free throws by Santos put Provincetown up by 10 (35-25) with five and a half minutes to play, and they were able to hold on for the 39-34 victory.
Every player was able to contribute something in the victory, and quick passing around the perimeter by the Provincetown girls was very effective.
“That’s our new philosophy — less dribbling, let the passing set up the shot,” coach Manley said, adding, “They’re scrappy. They did a nice job, especially in the man-on-man defense.
“Simone keeps us in the game, her shooting and quickness,” he said of Rose. “Sammy played well on the offensive and defensive boards. [She’s a] very heady player.”
Of Weber he added, “Brandi sure had her hands full” inside against the big Bristol-Plymouth forwards. Coach Manley also praised the inside play of Shelby Zawaduk and the defensive hustle of Holly Rose.
The Lady Fishermen, now 10-11, travel to Nantucket for round one against the powerful Whaler team Wednesday. Nantucket has crushed the Lady Fishermen in their two matchups this year, and a victory would be an amazing accomplishment.
The 12-8 Provincetown boys play their first round game on Thursday at Cathedral.
