March Madness at the ‘Fleet Center, otherwise known as the Billingsgate recreational basketball tournament, hit the Outer Cape over the weekend. Thirty-five teams from all over the Cape participated, starting Friday night and ending Sunday at the Wellfleet Elementary School and Nauset High School gyms.

Now called the Sonny Roderick Memorial Tournament/Billingsgate Lighthouse Charter Tournament, the tourney was renamed this year in dedication of the late Sonny Roderick, one of the founders of the tourney and well-known as a coach and Truro’s former recreation director.

A brief roundup: Emma Luster scored 16 points to lead the Provincetown’s fifth- and sixth-grade girls team to a 34-31 comeback win over Brewster in the finals. St. Francis Xavier Prep defeated Chatham in the fifth- and sixth-grade boys 46-17 in the final. Sam Telman scored 16 points for the victors.

In the seventh- and eighth-grade divisions, Liz Thompson scored 14 points to lead the Harwich girls in their 31-24 victory over Sandwich. It was Harwich again in the boys final, defeating St. Francis Xavier Prep 54-36. Joe Hegarty scored 14 for St. Francis.

In the adult final, the Brockton Bombers defeated the Wellfleet Bears 67-45. Steve Bernard scored 28 points for the Bombers and Bryan Grozier scored 12 for the Bears. —KM
