Errors get best of defense

The Provincetown High School softball team fell to 0-2 with a lopsided 21-5 loss to Chatham Monday afternoon under cold and cloudy skies at Motta Field. The Lady Fishermen lost to Mashpee 20-6 in last Thursday’s season opener.
Simone Rose had three hits and Sammy Lomba and Molly Costa had two hits each Monday against Chatham, an error-filled game for the young local squad.
“I’m very disappointed in the defense,” said PHS coach Michael Manley, who said he has been focusing on fielding and had expected it to be better. “I’m happy with the hitting. We’re ahead on that,” he said. “We have good base running. We have a fast team, but we have to put it together.”
Coach Manley said the team lacked focus. “Errors are contagious. The kids get down on themselves. They need confidence. We’ll get better as it gets warmer.”
Manley praised the play of seventh-grader Brittany Silva behind the plate. The team has only one senior, captain and third baseman Holly Rose, and one junior, center fielder Emma Silva. Starting pitcher Simone Rose is a strong athlete with impressive poise on the mound for an eighth-grader.
The girls have two more home games this week — a junior varsity game Wednesday against Sturgis, and Friday the varsity plays Nantucket. The Nantucket game was originally scheduled for the island.
