Fishermen felled by Nantucket
By Kevin Mullaney Banner Correspondent
The Provincetown High School baseball team faced mighty Nantucket Friday afternoon at Motta Field, losing 10-1 for their fourth loss in four tries, but this is not a season that is going to be judged by wins or even by the number of runs scored against them. The Fishermen are young, inexperienced and there are only 10 of them.
“This is the toughest rebuilding season you’re ever gonna see,” said coach John White.
Pitching on the varsity level is a major issue, and sophomore Jared King took the mound against Nantucket for his first time — a debut by fire that earned him kudos from coach White.
“He did a good job, overall outstanding,” said White. “In the beginning he got the ball over the plate. Our defense hurt him,” White said of the two big-run innings for Nantucket. They scored four runs in the second and five runs in the fifth innings. “He got more comfortable as the game went on and got tired in the end.”
Coach White said this year anyone who wants to can get a turn pitching, and he gives a lot of credit to King, “especially at this level.”
Good news for the team is the appearance of sophomore Zack Tobias, who just recently joined the team. Tobias, playing third base, made several nice plays against the Whalers.
Senior Alex Armour and juniors Cody Silva and Trevor Lambrou are the team veterans. Catcher Leo Rose is a sophomore. There are three freshman and one eighth-grader.
“Leo Rose and Jared have shown a lot of improvement from their freshman year,” said White. Rose, at catcher, played a solid game against Nantucket.
“This is going to be a great learning experience for these kids,” he said. “They’re gonna make a lot of mistakes and we’re gonna struggle with pitching, but the kids’ attitudes are great. They don’t get down on one another and everything out there has been totally positive.”
White said he’s gotten great feedback from the umpires after each game.
The softball team also took a pounding from Nantucket on Friday, losing 17-1. The girls are now 0-3.
