Fishermen edged out in extra innings
By Kevin Mullaney Banner Correspondent
Starting pitcher Cody Silva, the ace of the squad, struck out 19 batters and walked only one against South Shore Christian Academy in Weymouth on Wednesday, but two runs in the bottom of the seventh by SSCA tied the score at five. The game had to be suspended after 10 innings still tied at five. The game was resumed in Provincetown Saturday morning, prior to their scheduled double-header. Catcher Leo Rose scored on a Jared King single in the top of the 11th, but a two-out two-run homer gave SSCA a 7-6 victory.
The two teams then split the double-header, with Provincetown losing 15-12 in the first game and winning the nightcap 8-7. Zach Tobias has two hits and three RBI’s in the first game. Alex Armour and Silva knocked in two runs each. Silva got the complete game win in the second game, going three-for-three at the plate, scoring three runs and knocking in two. King went two-for-three with two RBI’s and a run and Chris Nabstedt knocked in the eventual winning runs with a two-run double. It was the Fishermen’s first win of the season.
Eight games into the rebuilding season with all the young players, coach John White said all he looks for is improvement. “We’re playing a lot better,” said White. “Our biggest weakness is finding a pitcher besides Cody. Our biggest challenge is to make someone else a pitcher. We’re hitting better, playing better defense.” White noted that in both losses to SSCA they left the bases loaded late in the game. “All the kids from last year have made strides this year,” he said.
“We don’t have much, but the attitude is fantastic. They enjoy playing,” White said. “Hopefully we can build something from this.” Now 1-7, the Fishermen travel to New Testament on Thursday then visit Sturgis on Monday.
