Lady Warriors crush Marshfield
After starting the season 1-5, the Nauset Regional High School softball team has won five of its last seven games and is in contention for a playoff spot as the season enters its final stretch.
The team scored nine runs in two innings against Marshfield to turn a close game into a convincing 12-3 victory Monday afternoon in chilly, windy North Eastham.
Freshman catcher Sara Roderick led off with a ground single, stole second, then made third and home on pass balls. Designated hitter Katee Varley then doubled home leftfielder Jen Evans, giving the Lady Warriors a 2-0 lead after one inning. Good fielding put away Marshfield in the top of the second, with Roderick throwing out a runner at second base and first baseman Victoria Sundby making a nice grab on a line shot.
Marshfield opened the fourth with a single and a walk and were able to tie the score with two consecutive fielder’s choice RBI’s. Varley doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, second baseman Kelly Johnson walked on a pass ball that put runners on second and third, setting the stage for a two-run single to center field by shortstop Amy White. Leading 4-2 with runners on second and third, Roderick laid down a bunt that drove in two runs and landed her on third. The Lady Warriors then scored five runs in the seventh for the 12-3 final.
“We’ve got a nice run going,” said Nauset coach Dave Dykeman. “We’re doing pretty well in the field, doing some nice things, and Kristina threw a nice game,” he added of starting pitcher Kristina Smith. The senior allowed only three hits, walked one and struck out four in the victory. “She’s a talented kid,” he said.
Victoria Sundby, third baseman Whitney Danish, Evans, Roderick and Varley are all producing at the plate, Dykeman said. Varley, the DH, he said, is a very good hitter. “She has a nice swing and is very disciplined at the plate.” Roderick, he said, “has been lights out.” The freshman is hitting over .500 and “has great speed. When she gets on first, forget it.” Roderick stole home in the sixth when Marshfield tried to pick her off.
Nauset has a tough stretch ahead to end the season. Wednesday they play Dennis-Yarmouth, Friday they take on Sandwich and then travel to Nantucket on Saturday. They have games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. “We’ve got some tough games ahead,” said Dykeman. “They’re playing well. They work hard every day. The team,” he added, “has great chemistry.”
